Among the 475,000 CDC-recorded yearly cases of Lyme disease in the U.S. are several of Olivia Abrams’ family members—including Abrams. “Ticks are becoming…an invasive species,” she says, spreading to new parts of the country but remaining tough to spot. Abrams found that car shammies, used to wipe drool off her family’s mastiffs, picked them up easily, so she developed a microfiber mitt that customers can rub over dogs, skin, or clothes after outdoor activities. The loops in the microfiber snag ticks’ hook-shaped legs and pull them off, helping to prevent bites.
