Conventional record players still rely on delicate tonearms that intimidate casual listeners. PP-1, a sculptural aluminum deck from Paris creative studio Waiting For Ideas, flips things—literally. Place a record upside-down on the device, and a retractable needle extends itself, with internal sensors to set the tempo at 33 or 45 rpm. “I couldn’t find a turntable I liked,” designer Jean-Baptiste Anotin says, “so I built one that’s as simple as pressing play on Spotify.” The plug-and-play table weighs about 20 lbs. and began shipping in March. A sleeker PP-2 and matching passive speakers are already on the drawing board, Anotin says.
