Following a 17-month renovation, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum reopened in April as a modern counterpart to the hallowed track it calls home. Tucked inside the famed speedway, the museum added 40,000 sq. ft., transforming what was once a static collection into an immersive deep dive into American racing culture. Opened in 1956 with just 12 cars on display, today it safeguards more than 55,000 artifacts and 150 vehicles. New installations pull visitors into the spectacle: one immerses guests in an 80-ft. LED projection capturing the pageantry of the Indy 500; simulators let would-be drivers attempt four qualifying laps; and a pit stop station gamifies the split-second choreography behind a tire change. The Indianapolis 500 Winners Gallery traces more than a century of racing history, from the 1911 Marmon Wasp to Dan Wheldon’s 2011 William Rast Dallara. A new 72,000-sq.-ft. facility for restoration and events, slated for late 2026, promises to further cement the museum’s role as a living archive of racing history.
