Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will be in the same room again Thursday night for the Alfred E. Smith charity dinner just a day after a heated final presidential debate.
The white tie charity dinner—an election year tradition for decades—typically provides a welcome break from the heated tone of the campaign trail with candidates delivering humorous speeches that poke fun at their opponents and themselves.
The unprecedented nature of the 2016 campaign has observers guessing what to expect. Trump has shown little ability to sit through jokes about himself (recall his stone-faced response to President Obama’s barbs during the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner). And the audience of elite New Yorkers like former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and state Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, both vocal opponents, could unnerve Trump.
The dinner, which is named for four-term New York Governor and Democratic Presidential Candidate Alfred Smith, benefits Catholic charities.
